Context & Inspiration: Nature as the Protagonist Yakushima was the first site in Japan to be registered as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site in 1993. Its landscape, harboring memories of ancient times, is as mystical as a scene from a movie. If this island were a story, the protagonist would undoubtedly be “Nature” itself. The concept of “Forest Mirror Image” was born from a profound reverence for this majestic wilderness. Here, architecture is nothing more than a “stage” or a “mirror” for nature to reflect and perform. Humans step back, becoming silent spectators gazing upon the beauty of natural form.
